Emergency First Aid at Work in Merseyside
It is a one day course for the person who steps in when a colleague collapses, chokes, or bleeds heavily.
It is ideal for low risk workplaces such as offices, shops, salons and schools.
How many certificate holders you need follows from your own first aid needs assessment, not a fixed national ratio (HSE).

Who should hold this certificate?
Nominate the people who are on site most, know the building, and are willing to act.
In most Merseyside businesses, that means a duty manager, a supervisor on each shift, and someone in reception or facilities.

Working on the docks, in warehousing or on a construction site? The three day First Aid at Work course is the better fit.
What does the course cover?
The day covers what genuinely comes up at work, and every skill is practised rather than just described.
Clinical content follows current Resuscitation Council UK guidance.
- The role of a workplace first aider, and where it stops
- Assessing an incident and staying safe
- An unresponsive casualty and the recovery position
- CPR on an adult
- Using a defibrillator (AED)
- Choking
- Severe bleeding and wound care
- Shock
- Seizures
- Minor injuries, burns and scalds
It does not cover the wider FAW syllabus or first aid for babies and children.

One day, around six hours, 9.00am to 4.00pm, with breaks.
The trainer signs off on practical skills as you go.
The day ends with a multiple choice assessment.
Nothing to prepare in advance. Wear clothing you can kneel in, as a fair amount happens on the floor.
Group sizes are capped at 12 delgates per trainer so everyone gets hands on time.
You receive an accredited certificate from the First Aid Industry Body, valid three years from the course date.
Standard courses are certified within 48 hours of successful completion.
The course is designed to meet HSE guidance and support your duty under the Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981.
Every delegate receives a FAIB accredited certificate.
Where a regulated qualification is required - for tenders, inspections or funding conditions - the Ofqual route through Qualsafe Awards is available on request.
One point for whoever signs off the booking. The HSE has not approved first aid training providers since 2013, so due diligence sits with you as the employer, and the HSE publishes guidance on what to look for.
Book a refresher before the three years are up. An expired certificate means retaking the full course.

There is no legal ratio. The number follows from your first aid needs assessment, which weighs up headcount, hazards and shift patterns. A small office often settles on two, so cover holds during holidays.
Usually not. High risk sites around Seaforth and the Knowsley industrial estates generally need the three day First Aid at Work course.
