First Aid at Work Course in Merseyside

First Aid at Work is the three day qualification for sites where the injuries are more serious, and help takes longer to arrive.

It is the right course where there is machinery, working at height, vehicles, chemicals, or heavy manual work.

Your first aid needs assessment decides whether one day or three day training is appropriate for your workplace (HSE).

Does your workplace need a three day first aide course?

Look at what could realistically go wrong on your site, and how long an ambulance would take to reach it.

Crush injuries, falls from height, serious bleeding, burns and chemical exposure all need a first aider trained beyond the one day syllabus.

High risk employers across Merseyside typically include:
 

• Dock and container operations around Seaforth and the Freeport
• Warehousing, logistics and distribution across Knowsley and Speke
• Manufacturing and engineering, including the Wirral and St Helens
• Construction and civil sites across the city region
• Utilities, waste, recycling and grounds maintenance
• Vehicle workshops, plant hire and transport depots

Low risk workplaces such as offices, shops and salons usually need the one day EFAW course instead. Mixed sites often train both.

A three day first aider covers the production floor, while EFAW holders cover the office and reception.

What is covered across the three days?

The course covers a wide range of injuries and medical emergencies, well beyond the one day syllabus.

Clinical content follows current Resuscitation Council UK guidance, and every skill is practised rather than described.
 

• The role of a first aider, and the limits of that role
• Assessing an incident and managing casualties
• CPR and use of a defibrillator (AED)
• The recovery position and choking
• Heart attack, stroke and anaphylaxis
• Seizures, asthma and diabetic emergencies
• Shock and other medical emergencies
• Head, spinal, chest and eye injuries
• Wounds, severe bleeding, fractures, sprains, strains and dislocations
• Minor injuries, burns, scalds and poisoning

Some hazards need training on top of this course. Sites working with specific chemicals or confined spaces should treat FAW as the base, not the whole answer.
