Blended Paediatric First Aid Course in Merseyside

Blended Paediatric First Aid runs for 12 hours. You complete the theory online at your own pace, then attend one practical day with a trainer.

Early years providers in England must have at least one person holding a current full paediatric first aid certificate on the premises whenever children are there and on every outing under the EYFS statutory framework (DfE).

Who needs a full paediatric first aid certificate?

Anyone counted in your staff to child ratios needs one, and so does whoever is left in sole charge.

Staff who gained a Level 2 or Level 3 childcare qualification on or after 30 June 2016 must hold a PFA certificate within three months of starting work to count in those ratios (DfE).

The course suits nursery practitioners, pre-school staff, childminders and their assistants.

Nannies book it too, usually because an agency or a family has asked for it.

Primary schools across Knowsley and St Helens send nursery and reception staff, along with breakfast and after school club leaders.

Parents and childcare students are welcome on open dates.

One certificate holder is the floor, not the target.

The framework expects you to weigh up your headcount, staffing and the layout of the building so a first aider can reach a child quickly (DfE).

What does the paediatric first aid course cover?

The syllabus follows the Annex A criteria in the EYFS framework, so it deals with babies and children rather than adults.

Clinical content follows the Resuscitation Council UK Guidelines 2025.
 

• The role and responsibilities of a paediatric first aider
• Assessing an emergency, recording and reporting
• An unresponsive infant or child, including the recovery position
• CPR on an infant and on a child
• Using an automated external defibrillator with a child
• Choking in an infant and in a child
• Bleeding, wounds and shock
• Bumps, bruises, sprains and fractures
• Head, neck and back injuries
• Burns, scalds and electric shock
• Foreign bodies, bites and stings
• Febrile convulsions and seizures
• Anaphylaxis and allergic reactions
• Asthma, diabetes and meningitis
• Poisoning Heat and cold conditions

 Practical work is done on infant and child manikins. You handle every skill yourself rather than watching a demonstration.
